Support Legislation

California Legislation 2019

The California Work and Family Coalition is currently working on the following priority bills...

SB 135 (Jackson) - Paid Family Leave

SB 142 (Wiener) - Workplace Lactation Accommodation

Cutting edge legislation that addresses the barriers parents face when balancing work and continuing to breastfeed/chestfeed. The bill will require employers to have a written lactation policy, that all lactation spaces meet minimum standards in providing a safe and comfortable space to pump, and for employees to be free from retaliation for choosing to continue to breastfeed/chestfeed after returning to work.

AB 406 (Limon) - Paid Family Leave: Application in non-English Languages

This bill would require the EDD to distribute the application for family temporary disability insurance benefits, in addition to the application in English, in all non-English languages spoken by a substantial number of non-English-speaking applicants.

How to Show Your Support

Write Support Letters

Legislators often consider the organizations and individuals who support or oppose a bill to help them decide how to vote. The Coalition is working with a number of organizations to send support letters before each Committee hearing and floor vote to make sure that legislators sees who is supporting these bills.

INSTRUCTIONS
1. Use the templates to draft your support letter. It is especially helpful to include personal anecdotes about how you or someone you know may have been affected by the problems that this bill tries to address, and/or how this bill aligns with your values.

2. Email the letter to the office where the letter is addressed and cc [email protected] so that we can keep track of who and how many have submitted letters.

Visit Your Representatives

The Coalition is working with member organizations to meet with legislators and talk to them about why these bills are important for low-income working parents and families in California. Legislators especially value speaking with their constituents.

If you would like to join a district visit, please email us at [email protected] with your zip code, the representatives you would like to visit, and the bills you want to speak about.
